Government Asked to Act on ‘Big Four’ Challenges Set by IOSH
A new manifesto launched by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) is a clear statement of purpose and calls for immediate action, according to IOSH Chief Executive, Rob Strange OBE. The new manifesto called ‘Creating a healthier UK plc’ was launched at the House of Lords by IOSH recently. The manifesto has pointed out four major concern areas for the Government and other bodies to act upon in order to make the UK a healthier and safer place for the workers.
The concern areas include attaining better health through better work, creating a risk aware society, providing help to small firms in managing risk, and providing better advice to people on health and safety issues.
Strange said that last year the number of British workers who lost their lives at the workplace stood at 229, with close to 299,000 sustaining injuries at work. In addition, around two million workers developed illnesses directly attributable to the environment that they work in. To decrease these figures, it was necessary for the Government and others to take initiative and put an action plan in place, Strange said.
Strange also suggested the inclusion of health and safety awareness programs as a part of the curriculum in schools and colleges. He said that contributions from young people and proper guidance to firms can speed up the process of improvement in health and safety at the workplace.
