Slow Rolling, Calling Clock, Wasting Time
Slow rolling someone is basically when you know you have the best hand (usually the nuts) and you wait to reveal your hand to your opponent until he has become quite comfortable and confident that you do not have the best online poker hand. Slow rolls often are not preflop, but after all the cards are out.
Recently, professional poker online player Justin Bonomo had the opportunity to try and avenge some past slow rolling and angle-shooting by none other than Men “the master” Nguyen.
Men is not the most conscientious online poker player in the game. He’s done the slow roll on television. He waited for a guy to show down his hand, basically told him his hand was good, and then showed the nuts right before the pot was shipped.
He’s also rumored to have made a deal with someone in a bounty tournament where $5,000 would be awarded to whoever knocked him out. He got short and offered a split to the table on his KO, and only played against those who agreed. The guy is pretty much a slimeball. The good thing is, he plays a lot of low buy-in events around LA, so a lot of amateurs will probably get the opportunity to do to him what Bonomo did.
At a final table, Men Nguyen made a significant raise that Bonomo was sure he would follow all-in on. Bonomo looked down and saw pocket Aces. Another player at the table had been complaining about needing to go to the bathroom. Bonomo told him to go and not to worry because he was going to need some time with his hand. This was a lie, obviously. You get to the final table with aces and face a raise for a huge pot and there is no thinking necessary. And sure, to guarantee a call, you might want to Hollywood it a little to appear a little weaker than you are, but you’re not taking 5 minutes to shove your chips in there. I’ve seen this before, but while it’s scummy, it can be considered part of the game. No hand is the nuts preflop. Well, Bonomo did this. He wasted everyone’s final table time, not only Men’s, in order to try and stick it to the master a little bit. Nguyen called with KQ and actually ended up winning.
But tournaments are all about using your time wisely. The blinds rise as the clock ticks and you’re constantly in a race to win hands to stay ahead.
