Bermuda for Family Vacations

Mass tourism that revolves around beachside resorts in “hotel zones” that have similar amenities, dining and entertainment options, does not appeal to us. – we would rather rent a villa or an apartment near the beach where we can keep an eye on the kids and don’t have to stand in line at breakfast buffets for an omelet. Resorts with kids clubs are fine as long as your kids are interested in the activities proposed or the films shown and you are happy with the personnel in charge of your wards. Having spent many a summer in St. Martin, St. Kitts, Jamaica, Barbados and Puerto Rico, we have seen everything from all-inclusive packages at mega resorts to sharing a rented private villa with another family. How else do you think I know so much about mass tourism and crowded beaches?

This year we wanted to stay closer home and opted to go to Bermuda. Looking up various sites on the net for Bermuda resorts, I noticed that Bermuda has cottage colonies on the beach with a common dining venue and a club house. The idea of a private cottage combined with common amenities appealed to us as we were sure that neither the restaurant nor the beaches would be crowded. We had heard about Horizons and Cottages from friends who had gone there for a family reunion. When I found out that they had housekeeping and baby sitting services available, I knew Horizons and Cottages was the right place for us.

We loved the panoramic views from the terrace of our cottage where we often shared a cup of coffee in quiet solitude with the kids still asleep. “Miranda” in the pool kept an eye on all us as we swam in the fresh water pool. There were days when we could walk down to Elbow Beach with the kids or go trekking along the Railway Trail. We were able to go snorkeling and scuba diving trips thanks to the babysitting service. We think very soon they will be ready to join us, given their enthusiasm during the glass bottom boat tours and helmet dives. That should be fun !
