Will Studying Make You Better?
In most things, I am the first to advocate studying. It makes you stronger, faster, and all together better prepared to meet the challenges that life throws at you. Everything can be made better if you go into with an informed point of view. Everything that is, with the possible exception of poker. This may be hard to believe in our modern poker culture that advocates that everyone can be the next great thing, but it’s true. Studying can actually have a negative effect on your poker abilities. The problem with really hitting the books to improve your poker online game is that there is a strong tendency to over study. People get over confident in their book smarts and think that they should win just because they happened to read a guidebook or two. The worst part of this equation is that the studiers often become overly frustrated when they don’t instantly become millionaires. After all, they put all that time into learning the poker game- it should have some payoff. Poker does not work like that. There is no way to guarantee that you will win just because you read a certain book or follow a certain strategy guide. You need to remember that over studying can ruin your game, so keep things in perspective.
