The majority of the drivers don’t pay much attention to car tyres. The only time they take notice when tyres fail otherwise filling air when they get low is all that the motorists think is necessary. Well, they don’t need to pay a great deal of attention. Since 1960s car tyres have undergone a revolution and modern tyres are much safer and economical than ever before.

In the beginning, tyres were considered as a part of the suspension system. Then, suspensions were not so good, streets were rough. And therefore, tyres were big, flexible and were more vulnerable to breakage. Treacherous blow-outs were regular in old-fashioned white-wall tyres. Loss of pressure in one tyre then could pitch the entire car badly and drivers had hard time controlling the car.

Consequently, tyre technology developed and new tyres were thinner protected by highly developed suspension. Having lessons that they had learned from high performance cars, engineers designed tyres that were wider and flatter, permitting for more grip on the road surface. This not only enhanced grip but also aided the handling and speed. Tyres in addition lost their inner-tubes, instead relying on air-proof rims and air-tight seals against the rim. Because inner-tubes were notoriously flimsy and susceptible to breakage, this seriously extended the stress that a tire could endure whilst remaining inflated.

Throughout the 1990s, an importance was placed on tyre security and long life. Front wheel drive was introduced and that meant the tyres will wear out sooner as they were consistently functioning in double shift, driving and steering. Therefore newer, tougher tyres were developed, which were better capable of withstanding wear and offering breaking power. Treads also came out in several variations to assist the grip. Different types of tyres were designed for various purposes. Hard grip tyres for race cars and soft and comfortable ones for commuter vehicles.

Tyres have come some distance and presently last for a longer time and are much safer than before. Then again, they’re still not indestructible and should be examined for wear by a mechanic 2-3 times a year. Furthermore tyres that are losing tread must be changed, because they eat away the mileage and make it harder for the car to stop or turn quickly, which can increase the chance of an accident. Due to the evolution of tyres, we see less accidents and get better mileage.
